This volume is a letter book which is comprised of contemporaneous copies of letters received at the Residency An office of the East India Company and, later, of the British Raj, established in the provinces and regions considered part of, or under the influence of, British India. at Bushire between 1779 and 1787. Most of the letters are from East India Company officials at Bussora [Basra] and Bombay. Many of the letters from Bombay also include enclosed letters from the Court of Directors The London-based directors of the East India Company who dealt with the daily conduct of the Company's affairs. , London. In addition, there are several letters from various ship captains, plus a limited number of translated letters from local rulers. The letters cover a wide range of topics including: trade, financial and administrative matters; political developments in Baghdad and Bussora; competition with the French in the Gulf and at Muscat.

The letters in this volume range from 8 June 1778 to 28 January 1787; however, they have not been arranged entirely in chronological order. Instead, they appear as three distinct date ranges: letters inward 12 June 1779-17 September 1781; letters inward 8 June 1778-28 May 1779; letters inward 20 September 1781-28 January 1787.
