Referring to your letter dated the 16th ultimo, No. 219FP., (para. 6 ;,
I am directed to state, for the information of the Government of India, that
immediately on the death of Syud Majid being known, Her Majesty steamer
Nymph was despatched to Zanzibar by the Commander-in-Chief in the Indian
Seas.

In accordance with the advice tendered to Syud Burgash by me some time
back, His Highness has addressed letters announcing his accession to Her
Majesty the Queen, the Duke of Argyll, Lord Granville, the Governor vreneral
of India, and the Governor of Bombay, and has sent these letters to me for
transmission to their destination.
His Highness having furnished me with copies of his letters, I am in a
position to know that he confines himself to the announcement of his accession
to the throne vacated by his brother Majid and to his acceptance of the agree
ment that passed between his late father and the British Government (I pre
sume he refers to the Commercial Treaty of 1839), but he is not at all clear on
this point, and I have called upon him to state plainly what he means. This
will form the subject of a separate despatch.
I have the honor in the meantime to transmit to you, herewith enclosed,
the letters addressed to their Excellencies the Governor General of India and
the Governor of Bombay. The letter to the Queen shall be sent direct to the
Duke of Argyll.
