•world now alive will have to tread.. After his demise I have, by the will of
God, ascended the throne of Zanzibar and its dependencies. I shall, please
God, continue to maintain friendship in perpetuity according to the agreement
entered into between Saeed Bin Sultan and the Government of India.

WAth reference to your letter No. 5o7 of Behruary the 9th, 1871, I am
directed to state that the Viceroy and Governor General in Council considered it
desirable to obtain further and trustworthy information of the present condi-
tion of affairs at Zanzibar before replying to the khureeta An important letter usually sent in an elaborate textile pouch, dispatched as part of the royal or diplomatic correspondence of rulers and elites. (dated 11 th October
1870, and not received here till 13th instant) which Syud Burgash has addressed
to His Excellency. I am accordingly to request that the Bombay Government
will take immediate steps for ascertaining the events which may have occurred
since the death of Syud Majid. The Viceroy and Governor General in .Council
■would also be glad to learn whether His Excellency the Governor of Bombay
has answered the letter addressed to him by Syud Burgash on the occasion of
his accession.

Telegram dated the 27th February 1871.

To— Viceroy, Calcutta.
Wolverine leaves immediately for Zanzibar. Is she to salute Sultan, or say
that until recognised by the Government of India. This cannot be done.
Early reply to our Zanzibar letter desired.

Telegram No. 423 P., dated the 28th February 1871.

To— Governor, Bombay, Parell.
All your Zanzibar letters have been answered : last letter answered on
24th. If hitherto customary for Her Majesty’s ships to salute Sultan of Zan
zibar on. arrival, Wolverine may take same course in respect to de facto ruler,
whoever he may be. No necessity for officer commanding Wolverine to
enter on subject of recognition.

The papers cover: the accession of Syud Burgash [Saiyid Barghash] as Sultan of Zanzibar; the despatch of HMS Wolverine to Zanzibar, and the question of whether the Wolverine should salute the new ruler; requests from the Government of India for information on Zanzibar affairs; the response to Syud Burgash's letter announcing his accession; the new ruler's attitude to the suppression of the slave trade; and correspondence concerning the formal recognition of Syud Burgash as Sultan of Zanzibar.

The Despatch includes correspondence from Dr John Kirk, Acting Political Agent A mid-ranking political representative (equivalent to a Consul) from the diplomatic corps of the Government of India or one of its subordinate provincial governments, in charge of a Political Agency. and HM Consul at Zanzibar.

The enclosures are dated 9 January to 3 October 1871.
