the recognised system of dress, and in hot weather it is desirable 1for iinstance S
roops should work in shirt sleeves, and generally speaking be clad as lightly as
possible. There is, however, nothing so smart and'workmanlike as a soldier in a khaki
shirt, with sleeves neatly rolled up, and shorts, and it is consequently not to this that
reference is made, but to cases of wilful slovenliness and untidiness which are so
often noticeable. This is a matter which reacts prejudicially on discipline, and it can
. only be checked firstly if officers set an example in such matters, and secondly if they
invariably notice, and where necessary deal with, such irregularities. Regular officers
are aware how many of the best fighting Regiments in the Army always bear a high
reputation for smartness, and the secret of this is that in these Corps a strong regimental
spirit permeates all ranks and inculcates in each individual the feeling that for the
honour of the Regiment such matters must be kept up to the highest standard.
(b) Akin to this.is the question of saluting. It is frequently noticed that officers
avoid saluting their superiors when they meet them, and that soldiers are allowed to
pass officers without saluting, unchecked. Neglect or carelessless in saluting not only
shows lack of discipline, but is a direct slight to His Majesty’s Commission and the
authority conferred by that Commission.
(c) The Army Commander directs, therefore, that all officers shall take these
matters in hand at once, so as to bring the force up to the same standard of smartness
and discipline as is demanded elsewhere.
