This item consists of a copy of a Political Despatch from the Government of India Foreign Department to the Secretary of State for India, dated 20 November 1874, reporting the transfer of Colonel Charles Herbert to the Political Agency An office of the East India Company and, later, of the British Raj, headed by an agent. at Oodeypoor [Udaipur], and the appointment of Lieutenant-Colonel John Pigott Nixon as Political Agent A mid-ranking political representative (equivalent to a Consul) from the diplomatic corps of the Government of India or one of its subordinate provincial governments, in charge of a Political Agency. in Turkish Arabia A term used by the British officials to describe the territory roughly corresponding to, but not coextensive with, modern-day Iraq under the control of the Ottoman Empire. [Ottoman Iraq]. The despatch requests that Lieutenant-Colonel Nixon be invested with the powers of a Consul-General. It is in continuation of despatch No. 185, of 16 October 1874.
