tities to juLfy the laying of one or more pipe-lines to one or more spots on the
coast or elsewhere and as soon as oil is being exported thereby, the Company
hereby undertakes to purchase, and the Ilkhani The paramount chief of certain tribes in south west Iran. hereby undertakes to dispose of,
his grLing and other rights over whatever Government or other land may be re
quired by the Company for their operations at the following rates :-for every
square of hundred yards on each side ten tomans 10,000 Persian dinars, or a gold coin of that value. , for ummgated arable land and

It is to be understood that it will still be incumbent on the Company in accord
ance with the concession to acquire the said lands from the Persian Government
in the manner specified in their concession or from the lawful owners, whoever
they may be, by purchase or otherwise.
The Ilkhani The paramount chief of certain tribes in south west Iran. further undertakes to sell whatever land may be in his own personal
possession at the following rates for every square of hundred yards on each
side ten tomans 10,000 Persian dinars, or a gold coin of that value. for unirrigated arable land and five tomans 10,000 Persian dinars, or a gold coin of that value. for non-arable land.
Irrigated land must be acquired by the Company at a reasonable value in accord
ance with the concession they hold from the Persian Government.
Lands so acquired shall be the absolute property of the Company for the
period of their agreement and any extension or renewal thereof, and the Company
shall have full proprietary rights therein.
Article 4.
No one shall have any right to graze flocks on land s,o acquired or in temporary
occupation of the Company for the purposes of exploration, and should they do
so, the Ilkhani The paramount chief of certain tribes in south west Iran. undertakes to punish them. Should anyone transgress the Com
pany’s boundaries and should they or any of their flocks meet with an accident
(which God forbid), the Company shall not be responsible.
Article 5.
All houses, shops, etc., which the Company may build on land sold as above
or temporarily occupied shall be free of all local taxes. The Ilkhani The paramount chief of certain tribes in south west Iran. or his repre
sentatives shall have no right to collect taxes from any of the people employed
by the Company or temporarily permitted to settle on the land in their possession.
Article 6 .
The Ilkhani The paramount chief of certain tribes in south west Iran. undertakes to give all the protection in his power to the Company
and to their staff and labourers in any part of his territory from theft, highway
robbery, assault, etc.
Similarly the Ilkhani The paramount chief of certain tribes in south west Iran. undertakes to protect all the property of the Company
and of their employes which may be exposed to wilful damage or to possible loss
or theft.
Article 7.
For this purpose, (as long as the Persian Government have not detailed
regular forces in accordance with the Company’s concession) it is further agreed
that the Company, in consultation with the Ilkhani The paramount chief of certain tribes in south west Iran. and with the knowledge
of the Persian Government, shall appoint permanent trustworthy guards at
whatever place they may wish to work under a reliable Persian of good family
whose pay and that of the guards shall be provided and fixed bv the Company in
consultation with the Ilkhani The paramount chief of certain tribes in south west Iran. and who shall remain there summer and winter.
