barter agreements with. Germany and Russia
Law and order were well maintained, but
migration to the Arab side of the Gulf continued.
A committee was set up to enquire into the causes
(pp.4, 16).
The port of Bushire now subsists only on its
forwarding business (p.5). Even this it will probably
soon lose to Bandar Sha.hpur (p* 6) •
In the circumstances British interests did well
to hold their ground. British products have a high
reputation (p.19), and their sale may increase now that
Germany has lost her position in the market.
V. Kuwait.
After considerable agitation in March and again
in August the Shaikh consented to the creation of an
elective advisory council which deprived him of much
of his power. In December, after further disputes, a
new Council was elected. Foreign relations remained
in the hands of H.M.G. (pp.26-7).
Further oil was struck at Burgan (p.28). There
are good prospects of producing oil in marketable
quant it i es » "kcu* a dj. 1tCt ,j .
Security in the hinterland was good (p.27).
Although the blockade continued, there were hopes
of a settlement of the trade disputes with Saudi Arabia.
Ibn Saud seemed more friendly, and invited the Shaikh
to Riyadh. He accepted, but had not made the visit by
the end of the year (p.28).
The Iraqi Press continued to publish occasional
hostile articles (p.28).
