southern limit of a district inhabited by the Amar u Kurds. Ihe district
is called Julgeh-i-Marus (the plain of

of the district), or Khak i-Amarlu (the ground of the Amarlu), or Dcrreh-
i-Satid-rud (valley of the white river), or simply Kurdistan. I his little
district has a separate Governor, who generally resides at Mashad. It is
watered bv the Satid-rud and bounded on the east by the high mountains
of Bar, mi the west by the Bar-i-Maden district, on the south by the
Nishapur district, and on the north by the sub-district Sar-i-Vilayet, a
part of the Mashad district. The Amarlu Kurds were brought here by-
Nadir Shah, and number at present about 500 families, which are divided
into five branches, viz., Begearlu, Urtukanlu, Izullu, and llafiad-we-
do-millet. The villages of this district are—Zerendi, Sheid Quh, Kelateb-
i-Mamish Khan, Marjan, Marus, Kelateh-i-lsmail, Lang i-pam Tang-i-
bala, Oarii, Kelateh-i-Mulla, Kelateh-i Murad, Bur], Relateb-i-Mulla Jafer-
Ali, adah-i-Mustafi, Kelateh-i-Shahi, Sineh-i-Asp-pain, Khunaver S.neh-
i-Asp-Bala, d'he mad to Chekeneh follows the right bank of the bafid-rud
and enters the S .r-i-vilayet sub-district, somewhat north of Khunaver o
the east is t he lleidari mountain, above 9,000 feet in height, to he west are
several mountain ranges, 5,0;)0 to 6,000 feet high, with the villages Bam,
Zahamekan, etc., on their western slopes 1 be river uhich uateis the

(lows below the village Sultan Meidan between two peaks called respec
tively, Markub and Ashiqkuh. Near Asluqkub lies the v.bage (.bekenec*
(originally Shah-kaneb) ; thence one road goes off to left to the Kuchan,
another to the right via Khalalu (Khanlerlu) Mashghuli, Gulsbanabad
Anderazi, Saidabad, Chinaran to Tus and Mashad. 1 his was also the o d

from Chinaran to Mashad forms the sub-district M lan-i-vilay et win
the country south-east of Mashad is called Pain-i-y.layet (middle and
lower country) ; many of the villages of the Mian-i-v.layet sub-district

A few nomads come every summer to Nishapur ; these are Baluchis and
Teimuris. The former settle down in the western, the latter in the eastern
part of the district. There are about 3,000 Baluchi families in Khorasau,
they were removed from Baluchistan ia \S6b In the Darb-i-qazi suu-
dish-ict, near the village Jilu and in the laghunkuh district near bhuiai,

This volume is Volume I of the four-volume Gazetteer of Persia (1886 edition). It was compiled for political and military reference by Lieutenant-Colonel Charles Metcalfe MacGregor, Assistant Quarter Master General, in 1871, and brought up to 31 July 1885 by the Intelligence Branch, Quarter Master General’s Department in India. It was printed by the Government Central Branch Press, Simla, India in 1886.
The areas of Persia [Iran] covered are Astarabad, Shahrud-Bustan, Khurasan [Khorāsān], and Sistan. The boundaries of the areas covered by Volume I are as follows: the Afghan border from the River Helmand to Sarakhs in the east; and from there a line north-west to Askhabad, due west to the Atrak, which it follows to the Caspian Sea; then along the sea coast to Ashurada Island; then in a straight line to Shahrud; and from the latter south-east to Tabas hill, Sihkuha, and the Helmand, from where the river first meets the south-east border of Sistan.
The gazetteer includes entries on human settlements and buildings (forts, hamlets, villages, towns, provinces, and districts); communications (passes, roads, bridges, canals, and halting places); tribes and religious sects; and physical features (rivers, streams, springs, wells, fords, valleys, mountains, hills, plains, and bays). Entries include information on history, geography, buildings, population, ethnography, resources, trade, agriculture, and climate.
Information sources are provided at the end of each gazetteer entry, in the form of an author or source’s surname, italicised and bracketed.
