A commentary by ʿIṣmat Allāh ibn Aʿẓam ibn ‘Abd al-Rasūl al-Sahāranfūrī (عصمة الله بن أعظم بن عبد الرسول السهارنفوري, or Sahāranpūrī [سهارنپوری], d. ca 1690, see f. 127r, line 4) on the popular Summa of Arithmetic (خلاصة الحساب) by Bahā’ al-Dīn Muḥammad ibn Ḥusayn al-‘Āmilī (بهاء الدين محمد بن حسين العاملي; d. 1621).

The text of the commentary was completed on 19 Dhū al-Ḥijjah 1086/5 March 1676 (f. 127r, lines 2-3) and the present copy was finished on 10 Muḥarram 1105/11 September 1693 (the scribe gives 1505 in error) in the town of Jaljalah (جَلجَلة), a suburb of Bijapur in the Deccan, during the reign of ʿAlamgīr (Aurangzeb, reg. 1658-1707). It was copied by the scribe ʿAbd al-Bāqī ibn al-Qāḍī Muḥammad ʿĀshiq (عبد الباقي بن القاضي محمد عاشق), an inhabitant of the citadel of Fīrūzpūr (see colophon Section at the end of a manuscript text. , f. 127r, lines 9-14).

Folios 2-4 are replacements, in a different hand and f. 17 is an insert. Content headings up to the Fifth Chapter are written out on f. 127v with the remainder now lost.

سبحان من عنده علم الحساب لصفات كماله وأسمائه وله علم العدد لجمع آياته وقسمة نعمائه

وصلوة وسلاما على من كان بظهوره تفريق أهل البغى والطغيان وبقدومه تنصيف أهل الفسق

والكفران وعلى آله الذين يضرب من سعيهم تضعيف صحيح الدين وكسر أعدائه...

Ends: (f. 126v, line 16-127r, line 1):

... وهذا كما أوصى الشيخ في الإشارات

بالبخل عن تعليم الحكمة لمن ليس من أهل الإشارات فإن لم يكن المخاطب من أهل هذا

Foliation: British Museum foliation in pencil; Eastern Arabic foliation in red ink (black from ٦١); The start of each quire Collection of papers folded in half and stitched together to form a gathering of folios. (here called juzʾ) is noted in digits and written out in full (corresponding to the Eastern Arabic foliation) along with the year of copying in digits (١٠٨٦) in the recto The front of a sheet of paper or leaf, often abbreviated to 'r'. margins every ten pages (quinions) from ff. 23r-123r.

Ruling: Misṭarah ; 17 lines per page; vertical spacing 9 lines per 10 cm

Script: Naskh; the scribe is ʿAbd al-Bāqī ibn al-Qāḍī Muḥammad ʿĀshiq (عبد الباقي بن القاضي محمد عاشق, see colophon Section at the end of a manuscript text. , f. 127r, line 13)

Ink: Black ink, with rubricated chapter headings and lemmata overlined in red

Decoration: None

Binding: India Office The department of the British Government to which the Government of India reported between 1858 and 1947. The successor to the Court of Directors. half leather binding with boards and doublures marbled in pink, yellow, black, white and grey inks; gold-painted textblock edges; remains of green ribbon kept in box with volume

Condition: Generally good; some stains and smudges; corner of f. 34 damaged and repaired.

Marginalia: Marginal notes, corrections and diagrams throughout
