Content: The volume consists of Enclosures to Despatches to the East India Company Secret Committee Pre-1784, the Committee responsible for protecting East India Company shipping. Post-1784, its main role was to transmit communications between the Board of Control and the Company's Indian governments on matters requiring secrecy. , dated 1 January-12 April 1848. The despatches themselves are not included in the volume. The enclosures cover various events in Aden, India, Mesopotamia [Iraq], Persia [Iran], Sind [Sindh] and Somalia.

Arrangement: The items are arranged in chronological order from the front to the rear of the volume.
Physical characteristics: Foliation: the foliation sequence (used for referencing) commences at the first folio with 1 and terminates at the last folio with 547; these numbers are written in pencil, are circled, and are located in the top right corner of the recto The front of a sheet of paper or leaf, often abbreviated to 'r'. side of each folio. An additional foliation sequence is present in parallel between ff 387-547; these numbers are also written in pencil, but are not circled. The foliation sequence does not include the front and back covers. The sequence contains one foliation anomaly: f 1a.
