The above Instruments are fixed at about 4.| feet from the ground, to a post in a thickly
chuppered house, and are freely exposed to the air, and sheltered from any influence of Solar
^Onlhe^rd and 24th, the Weather Cock was repairing, no observations taken on those days.

Extracts frorti the Log of the Ketch u Ceylon Island*
On 12'A April, was within 25 miles of Colombo in Ceylon, when at 7 A. M, the
wind became very violent at E.S.E., the sea high, and much rain tell. It was a
heavy gale, and obliged the vessel to put back, and accordingly she ran VV.JN.VV.
On the 13th. —At 8 A. M. the wind at S.S.E. abated, and the vessel again stood
towards Colombo.
On the 14^. — At 7 a. M. the wind veered by East to South, and the course was
shifted to South by East.
On the 15th. —At 4 A, M. the wind was South by East to S.E., very strong
with much spray, accompanied by violent gusts of wind and rain, making it diffi
cult to steer the vessel. The sea washing over the sides, no resource was left but
to shift the vessel’s course again. It blew tremendously.
On the 1 6th. —Same wind, lost the mizen top-mast, cross-jack yards, and had all
the sails blown away. The hold began filling with water at the rate of 14 inches
the first half hour, afterwards faster 3 the pumps were kept constantly going night
and day, scudding before it.
On the 17th. —The wind was South, blowing a gale, and the course was west.
On the 18^.—The wind South, and still violent, steering North. Got a sight
of the sun. Latitude 9° 14 s North.
On the 19J/&.—Same gale, S.W. very heavy, the spray considerable, and the
sea washing over the sides of the vessel.—Latitude 11 ° 11 ' North.
On thelS)th. —A heavy SAY. gale, steering N.W.—Latitude 12° 42 N North.
21 s£.—Gale moderating at West.—Latitude 14° 19' West,.
22 nc?. Do. at West.—Latitude 15° 39' North.
23rd .—Moderate wind at N. W.—Latitude 16° 20 h North.
[The above extracts are compiled from three or four accounts, differing f 1 ’ 0111 ^
another in important points, but all shewing the vessel being in a gale f rom
to 20th April.]
