offices, and as these officials are not good characters, he (Abdoollah Khan) should not be held
answerable for Herat matters. His Highness has therefore written to Khowaja Mahomed
Khan, of Deh Afghan, who has been lately deputed to Herat, to the effect ‘ that on his arrival in
Herat he should dismiss the officials of Sirdar Leader of a tribe or a polity; also refers to a military rank or title given to a commander of an army or division. Futteh Mahomed Khan, and make over the

by him in these departments have consequently been dismissed, and that he should submit the
accounts of the last year quickly.”
655. I return to the movements of the now refugee prince, and of the
Ameer’s force.
On news arriving of Yacooh’s move, Uslum and Feramoz moved their force
from the right to the left hank of the Helmund, where provisions were more plen
tiful. A letter was now received from Khan Agha, Jumshedee of Herat, addressed
to him by Yacoob and saying—
" that as friendships are formed with reference to their being useful on future occasions, and
as while he ( Sirdar Leader of a tribe or a polity; also refers to a military rank or title given to a commander of an army or division. Mahomed Yacoob Khan) was Governor of Herat, he always acted in accord
ance with Khan Agha's wishes, he (Khaii Agha) should now aid him as far as he could, and
that his success would be very beneficial to Khan Agha.”
Khan Agha in sending up the letter said, he was not shaken in his loyalty to
the Ameer, and begged to be regarded as Yacoob’s enemy. 656 657 658
656. On the 27th March Futteh Mahomed sent from Herat news [received
on the 7th April] that Yacoob had on the 26th laid siege to Ghorian, 30 hos
from Herat, and that he had sent off his own son, Abdool Azeez, Abdoollah Khan,
Nasiree, and others with reinforcements to strengthen the place. The Commander-
in-Chief had already desired Sirdar Leader of a tribe or a polity; also refers to a military rank or title given to a commander of an army or division. Mahomed Alum Khan [son of Said Mahom-
med Khan, Peshawuree, one of Dost Mahommed’s brothers] to take a cavalry re
giment from Girishk to Herat; but Uslum on hearing of this order [he was now
on his way to Cabul ] had remonstrated against it saying, that one cavalry regi
ment would, under the circumstances, do no good at Herat.
657. The Ameer, on hearing this news, expressed himself bitterly against
the Persians for having twice afforded shelter to Yacoob, and having now des
patched him again into Afghanistan to raise disturbances.
658. The Viceroy had already heard of this movement of Yacoob from
the Political Superintendent, Upper Sind Frontier, and had on the 28th April,
telegraphed to Mr. Alison :
“ Report from Candahar states that Yacoob Khan advanced with a force of about 500 men
. XT n/ ,„ through Persian territory- to Ghorian, in Afghan
Political A, Proceedings, May 1871, ho. . territory, which he took, and is now investing
Herat. If reported advance through Persian territory be correct, explanation should be asked
for, as it appears to be a breach of assurances given by Persian Government.”
