To General Shaw,
Political Resident
A senior ranking political representative (equivalent to a Consul General) from the diplomatic corps of the Government of India or one of its subordinate provincial governments, in charge of a Political Residency.
, Aden.
After Compliments.
We have received your letter which was sent by our
Wazir
Minister.
, Sheikh Farid bin
Awadth, and have noted its contents. You mention, oh friend, that] the Zaidis
had been defeated by Ah-ad-Dahir. At that time a small party had only arrived.
It had come on a spying expedition. There was not a strong force. It appears
now from their letter as well as it is rumoured by people coming from the North
that a strong force is expected to come. We are afraid that if they are not resist
ed by a strong force and war material they would ■over'Yun the country. These
people are rebellously and aggressively disposed against the limits of the Arabs.
In Jacob’s letter it is stated that we have ample quantity of arms and ammunition
but we had only a small quantity which we have ^already and completely disbursed
amongst our soldiers and brothers. The area of the tract is extensive. You are
a capable Government. We do not want the Arabs to come to know that we do
not expect to receive any other help from you. We do not expect you to give us
excuses while you are capable. We send this letter by a messenger to overtake
our son Alawi at Mokala or Aden. We don’t think that land journey is safe for our
messengers. We fear that the Turks might waylay our men 'and intercept our
confidential letters. We request you to send us our requirements by the lad Alawi
bin Salem. We have received the Rs. 200.
