u
Mio Lordship- feels considerable doubt
as to the advisability of adoptirg
two of the suggestions irade by the
Government of India -
(1) The proposed amplification
of Article 5 of the 1915 agreement
so as to provide for freedom of
religious observances and rites for
Moslems of British Nationality.
Lord Birkenhead doubts wheth
a provision of this kind would in
fact either secure for Moslems of
British nationality any greater
freedom for religious observance
in the Hedjaz or secure for the
British Government any appreciable
er
measure of gratitude; while on the
other hand it appears highly probable
that it would involve the British
Government in interference in
matters of religion (or what would at
any rate be represented as such
interference). It seems doubtful
whether Ibn Baud would, or could, in
any case agree to the inclusion of
such a provision, and Lord Birkenhead,
as at present advised, would be
inclined notto propose it.
(2) The suggested provision for
recognition by Ibn Baud of the
prescriptive rights of the British
Government in regard to the
policirg, lighting and buoying of the
Persian Gulf The historical term used to describe the body of water between the Arabian Peninsula and Iran. .
Lord Birkenhead is inclined
to think that this is unnecessary
