and a hand of 100 horsemen, attacked three villages in the Nahie of Aintab, stayed
in each over a day, and carried off 300 sheep, 150 cattle, 5 horses, and many
carpets, Husse i n sen t orders to his brother to procure some money for him.
His brother therefore made a raid on twenty-one villages in the district of Aintab,
from the Christian inhabitants of which nearly 350/. and 200 “batmans” of butter
were collected and sent here to Hussein. Hacho, a Christian of Patnoss, refused to
give 5/. demanded of him. Pour servants of Hussein went by night to Hacho’s house.
Hacho was absent, so they mortally wounded his son’s bride, and killed his two
children, a^ed 6 and 7. Hacho returned next day, and found the woman on the point
of death. ^However, she was able to give the names of the murderers. Hacho was
warned that, if he gave information, he would be immediately killed.
Avani, mentioned at the beginning of this despatch as having foimcrly hi ought
an action against Hussein at Van, has recently arrived here with a like intention. It
seems probable, however, that the matter will be hushed up, and that it will be made
worth Avani’s while to let the action drop.

I HAVE the honour to inform you that a recent attempt to take the census was
received very badly by the Kurds generally, and particularly so in the neighbourhood
of Bashkalek. Many Kurds there abandoned their homes temporarily and some took
to highway robbery and other deeds of violence, so that even in the tow r n of Bashkaleh
there was considerable alarm lest houses be broken into by night.
Por the moment, it has been decided to relax the efforts made in this direction, and
only those districts will be registered which show a moderate degree of willingness to
admit it. Ol course, the opposition to the census has its source in the expectation that
it is to be accompanied by conscription among the Kurds in Hekkiari. But, little by
