the Egyptians as a whole refuseHo give evidence
before the Mission and even made demonstrations
against it hy stone-throwing, etc., which had to be
quelled by force, its position would be extremely
disagreeable and not altogether dignified. It
might well he that until the Peace Conference is
over and Egyptians regard the decisions as definite
they might try to render the labours of the Mission
abortive by conduct of the above hind. On the
other hand I admit that General Allenby ought to be
the best judge on this question and he evidently
v;ishes the Mission to go out soon.
Of one thing I feel quite sure, and that is
that it is essential to procure Lord Milner’s
services on the Mission. Sir William Garstin or
General Maxwell, or, indeed, a statesman v/ith no
knowledge of Egypt, might be able to carry out a
satisfactory enquiry into the causes of the out
break, the grievances, etc., but Lord Milner is in
an unique position to frame a satisfactory form
