Foreign Office,
May 19th, 1919.
It was most unfortunate on Saturday that your
message for me came a few minutes after I had left
for the station. It was one of the three Sundays
that I have "been av/ay this year, and I went to
Panshanger, within easy reach, hut unluckily the
last snowstorm had destroyed the telephones.
You must have wished to speak to me about
Egypt before you left for Paris. The more I hear
from Egyptian residents returning home, and the more
I think about it, the less certain I feel that it is
desirable for Lord Milner T s Mission to go out to
Egypt at once. The affect of the Missions
immediate departure would undoubtedly help the situa
tion here. But I am not at all sure that Egypt is
in a fit condition to receive a Mission. Disturb
ances, though on a small scale, and even attempts to
attack
