uninvited, later, to say that all agreements
made by them with the Mulla Powicdah
are solely for the settlement of their private
affairs, and are on the understanding that
no opposition to Government is intended; it is
known, however, that several members of this
Jirga swore at the meeting to follow the Mulla
Po win dab through thick and thin. Several
Maliks have since come in, and unanimously
admit that the object of the meeting was to
organise z jehad, but they say the two Mullas
did not receive much encouragement.
M'hen the Malang was in Shawal, certain
Hindus went to pay their respects to him, and
he ordered that each should have his right
foot tied to a tree and hammered with rifle-
butts for being unbelievers and subjects of
Government. This was done, and the unfortu
nate men weie only released on agreeing to
hand over all their property which was
distributed amongst the Malang’s followers.
A large number of Government Maliks were
present, but did nothing to help the Hindus.
It is also reported that these Maliks tendered
shukrana to the Malang. One of the Hindus
has come to Datta Khel, for treatment, with
his foot badly injured.
The majority of the Wazirs who were
fined for complicity in the Karkanoba affair
(see Journal for June) have paid up the fine
and compensation due from them, and the
remainder have surrendered rifles as security
for payment. All have given the requisite
security for good behaviour in future.
A gang of nine Gangi Khels of Birmal
raided the Shingis in Badar, in Mahsud country,
and carried off four children, 50 cows, and 80
goats. The children were subsequently
released, but there is little chance of the
animals being returned, although the Sardar Leader of a tribe or a polity; also refers to a military rank or title given to a commander of an army or division. of
Urghun has been addressed about the raid by
the Political Agent A mid-ranking political representative (equivalent to a Consul) from the diplomatic corps of the Government of India or one of its subordinate provincial governments, in charge of a Political Agency. .
The Mahsud jirga came in to the Political
Agent, Wana, at Sarwekai, at the end of July
over the Sarwekai raid (see last two Journals),
and after some discussion the case was settled
by the Political Agent A mid-ranking political representative (equivalent to a Consul) from the diplomatic corps of the Government of India or one of its subordinate provincial governments, in charge of a Political Agency. agreeing to release at
once Nazar Din, one of the Mahsuds captured
by the Militia, against whom there is no
evidence of complicity in the raid, and to
exchange the other Mahsud prisoner, Mohabat,
for a worse offender, and by the tribe lodging
security of Ks. 3,000 for three years against any
outbreak in consequence of the raid. The tribe
as a whole appeared perfectly satisfied with
the settlement, and also took upon themselves
the responsibility of handing over any offenders,
in addition to forfeit of security, if any offence
were committed. Jambil, the father of
Mohabat, gave some trouble at the jirga, and
was eventually taken by the Maliks to the
Mulla Powindah who pacified him, but on the
