On the 4th August, a Tori Khel Malik
sent in word to Miram Shah that a messenger
had arrived from Razmak with the news that
the Mulla Powindah, while endeavouring to
settle some differences with unfriendly Wazirs
at Badar, found himself in difficulties, and
sent a man to Razmak and Sham to give out
that he (the Mulla) had been captured by
Government. The Tori Khels and Mohmit
Kb els turned out in large numbers to rescue
tbe Mulla, but after going some distance
discovered that tbe news was false. The
Mulla’s motives for this affair are not clear,
unless his intention was to ascertain the value
of the professions of loyalty of the Tori and
Mohmit Khels. That the clans were bent on
mischief is clear, as a Tori Khel, who was
accidentally killed on the road, was buried
with all the honours accorded to a ghazi, on
tbe ground that he bad set out with the
intention of jehad in his heart.
On the night of the 8th August, a raiding
party visited the new Dande post, and fired on
some labourers there, one of whom was wound
ed. The raiders bolted on the guard turning
out. The same gang on the 11th August
attempted to raid some hamsayas of a Daur
Malik of Khatte Killa in Hamzoni. Timely
warning had however been received, and the
raiders got a warm reception, two of them
being killed and another wounded; the
others managed to escape after wounding two
of the hamsayas.
The Malang and the Mulla Powindah
had a meeting at Marobi early in August, and
several thousand Mahsuds and Wazirs are said
to have been present. After a private con
ference with the Mulla Powindah, the Malang
got up in full jirga, and said that he had
been sent by the Amir to hold a jirga of
Mahsuds and Wazirs to ascertain their views,
as His Highness was ready to help them
under certain circumstances. The Malang
then suggested that the Mulla Powindah
should undertake to drive the British
out of the Gomal valley, while he would
undertake to do the same in the Tochi valley.
The Mulla Powindah replied that he had
made certain promises to Government, and
would not break them unless Government
first broke its promises; and as far as can be as
certained, no definite arrangement was arrived
at, but all present swore on the Koran to act
in concert when the time came. It is pos
sible that some opposition to Government is
intended, and that a grievance will be manu
factured. Mad Akbar and Sadda Khan, two
influential Maliks, who both arrived at Miram
Shah, while the meeting was being held,
apparently to show that they were not in
sympathy with it, said that it had been
called to organise opposition to Government.
A Khushali Tori Khel jirga also came in,
