Genre/Subject Matter:

View from the old fort on Hormuz Island (perhaps the Fort of Our Lady of the Conception, also known as the Portuguese Castle) towards a settlement, likely Hormuz itself. All the structures are low-lying stone buildings with wooden or reed roofs.

Craggy hills rise in the background at right and the shoreline curves away into the distance. A flagstaff left of centre may denote the presence of the British agency An office of the East India Company and, later, of the British Raj, headed by an agent. . A dhow A term adopted by British officials to refer to local sailing vessels in the western Indian Ocean. is anchored at far left and several figures can be seen along the shoreline at left.

This is the second (left-hand) image in a panoramic pair taken from the same position. The first is Photo 49/1/13.
