This file contains strength returns from units of the British Army, the British Indian Army, and the Royal Air Force in India, including forces deployed in Persia [Iran], the Persian Gulf The historical term used to describe the body of water between the Arabian Peninsula and Iran. ports, and Aden as of 1 November 1923. The strength returns were issued by the Adjutant-General in India. They detail the number of personnel currently serving with military branches and individual units, grouped under the following categories:

  • ‘Regular Forces’
  • ‘Indian Army Reserve’
  • ‘Auxiliary Force-India’
  • ‘Military Police and Levies’
  • ‘Imperial Service Troops’
  • ‘Departmental and Administrative Services’.

Some returns are further divided into sub-categories such as: sanctioned, authorised, and actual strength; British and Indian officers, other ranks, civilians, and followers; ‘Class I’, ‘Class II’, ‘Class A’, and ‘Class B’ personnel; ‘Active’, ‘Reserve’, and ‘Cadet’ personnel; and ‘Mounted’, ‘Dismounted’, ‘Infantry’, and ‘Foot’ personnel.
