The file is a memoir of the career of Major John Evelyn Arnold Bazalgette, covering his service in the British Army and in India and the Persian Gulf The historical term used to describe the body of water between the Arabian Peninsula and Iran. .

The file consists of three parts. The first part is a draft of a short memoir entitled ‘Jack of all trades’, which recounts Bazalgette’s experience in the Indian Political Service The branch of the British Government of India with responsibility for managing political relations between British-ruled India and its surrounding states, and by extension the Gulf, during the period 1937-47. . The memoir contains the following chapters, with additional chapters 9-18 listed but not included.

The second part is a copy of Bazalgette’s published memoirs entitled ‘The Captains and the Kings Depart’. The memoir contains the following chapters:

Physical characteristics

Foliation: this file consists of two physical folders and one physical volume. The foliation sequence (used for referencing) commences at the front cover of folder one (ff 1-117), continues through the volume (ff 118-193), and terminates at the last folio of the second folder (ff 194-550); these numbers are written in pencil, are circled, and are located in the top right corner of the recto The front of a sheet of paper or leaf, often abbreviated to 'r'. side of each folio. Additional mixed printed and written foliation sequences are present in parallel between ff 4-16 and ff 194-550.

Pagination: the file also contains an original printed pagination sequence between ff 123-192.
