It appears from later reports, that yesterday evening before the 11th Cavalry
Brigade had received reinforcements, its right flank was forced back* by the
enemy. The Brigade however still he'd its podtion across the Mosul Boad at
Huwaish with its right flank thrown back
c anges ‘ to the Tigris above the Ferry. This was
in order to meet the attack of a detachment of the enemy with two guns which
appeared from the north.
To-day at 1-45 a.m., the 17th Division resumed its advance from a posi
tion three miles south of Shergat which it captured yesterday. The enemy
fell back to a position among nullahs and broken ground about 3 miles S. W.
of Huwaish where the hulk of their troops were strongly entrenched. This
area was assaulted by the 17th Division about 4 p.m.
Owing to the nature of the ground and stubborn resistance progress was
slow. By 6-30 P.M., our troops had penetrated deep into the position when
further progress was checked by heavy machine gun fire. Further attack was
postponed until to-morrow morning. The 7th Cavalry Brigade this afternoon
cut off a detachment ot Turks who attempted to escape to the north-west taking
1,000 prisoners and much material.
The 3rd Corps Detachment continued its activity against the enemy
position at Altun Kupri.
The Turks have been busily engaged in adding to the strong strength of
ther defences here.
