The area to the south would provide ample room for
the Armenians. There would be no need to disturb the
riverain Arabs. Th© land is all Miri*
(d) To findland-for the Armenians north of Mosul on
the frontier would be the most satisfactory course and also
f the cheapest as the land is daim but it is doubtful whether^
J it would politically be practicable as it would almost ceruai
| involve eviction of the present occupiers,
4. The Lesser Zab project would appear to be the most
feasible though probably the most expensive, it is
impossible without a survey to estimate the cost of the
canal but I understand there would be some heavy digging
owing to the undulating nature of the ground.
We should have to feed the Armenians while the work
is in progress and if we feed the Armenians we shall have
to pay for the work done hy the Dizai. Of the cost of
this again we cannot judge till a survey has been made and
we know the number of men - days and cubic feet involved#
5 , I estimate that 14,000 Armenians of all ages and
both sexes would cultivate about 2,000 feddans at most. ■•©
should, therefore, require 1,000 yoke of bullocks at least,
probably more. These we might buy from the Army, who are
now considering the possibility of selling|pff all their
Transport bullocks. i?'or 1,000 yoke we should probably have
to pay 3
lakhs
One lakh is equal to one hundred thousand rupees
(Rs.SOOAper yoke). This is a low price for
Indian bullocks*
Another one and a half
lakhs
One lakh is equal to one hundred thousand rupees
at the very least
would be required for agricultural implements (at 75/- per
feddan). Seed grain fcr the area which would he cultivated
in the first year is estimaTeu at 50Q tons, of whicn tne
cost and transport would not be less than a
lakh
One lakh is equal to one hundred thousand rupees
(wheat and
barley): This totals 5i
lakhs
One lakh is equal to one hundred thousand rupees
for agricultural outfit at
a low estimate.
The cost of supplying tents until the people could
build houses I cannot pretend to estimate but Repatriation
could supply figures for this and for feeding for, say,
seven
