R* No # 5962. It might be represented to Persian Prime
Minister in connection with recent telegrams to Foreign Olfice
that return of Assyrians to their homes might perhaps be
utilised as means of redressing balance of power in that
region* Christian Urumians here are undoubtedly loyal
to Persian Government and are anxious to present an address
of welcome to His Imperial Majesty during his visit to
Mesopotamia* This is being arranged* Under present
arrangements the quasi-military organisations known as
Assyrian and Urumian battalions cease to exist as soon as
they (group omitted*»?leave) Mesopotamian territory, and
their British Officers will be withdrawn* I anticipate,
however, that it might be possible to maintain latter as
military unit as far as Urumia, in case Persian Government
it
should be desirous of taxingXover and utilising it for
restoration of order* The Urumia battalion is a smart,
well-disciplined force which should be of considerable use*
It would of course be understood that Persian Government
would have to pay the cost unless His Majesty*s Government
make other arrangements, nor would army in Mesopotamia be in
a position to j£ind transport or supplies* The distance from
our frontier to Urumia is, however, very short, and I do not
anticipate serious trouble in this matter*
