This item consists of copies of correspondence, consultations, memoranda, resolutions, and minutes cited in, or enclosed with, political letters from the Government of Bombay From c. 1668-1858, the East India Company’s administration in the city of Bombay [Mumbai] and western India. From 1858-1947, a subdivision of the British Raj. It was responsible for British relations with the Gulf and Red Sea regions. [Mumbai]. The item concerns the proclamation of the Imaum of Muscat [Sayyid Sa‘īd bin Sulṭān Āl Bū Sa‘īd] prohibiting the sale of enslaved people to, or purchase of them from, British subjects, and the importation of British subjects from India. The item concerns the legal implications of this proclamation and the extent of the Bombay criminal court’s jurisdiction over British subjects accused of trading enslaved people while in the territory of the Imaum of Muscat.
