The General Officer Commanding, Force “ D,” was informed of the transport accompanying reinforce
ments under despatch from India, and of dates on which the 1,500 mules and 700 carts might be
expected.
The Base Commandant, Marseilles, reported the sailing of the “ Sofala ” and “ Kentucky, ,, giving details
on board.
The Secretary of State was informed that it would be necessary for the War Office to supply kilts and
other special articles for the 2 Highland battalions, except shoes, which would be arranged
for in India, also that details of requirements would be furnished to the Director-General of Stores,
India Office The department of the British Government to which the Government of India reported between 1858 and 1947. The successor to the Court of Directors. .
The Deputy Political Resident A senior ranking political representative (equivalent to a Consul General) from the diplomatic corps of the Government of India or one of its subordinate provincial governments, in charge of a Political Residency. , Basrah, communicated information obtained from 3 Shammar Arabs
re the position of affairs between Bin Sa’ud and Bin Rashid. He stated that the son of the
Sharif of Mecca had visited Athala for the purpose of claiming tax from Ataiba, and that friendly
relations were said to exist between Bin Sa’ud and the Sharif of Mecca.
The Agent to the East Indian Railway reported to the Quartermaster General that East Indian Rail
way steamers were paddle steamers burning coal, could tow two barges and had accommodation for
700 passengers.
The Quartermaster General informed the Director, Rcyal Indian Marine, that the General Officer
Commanding, Force “ D,” had again asked urgently for information of river craft. He also stated that
the East Indian Railway had wired particulars of steamers except draught, and he enquired how
they could be got to Basrah.
The Quartermaster General asked the Assistant Director, Royal Indian Marine, Calcutta, to wire full
particulars of any native jute-carrying boats which could supplement barges for Force 44 D.”

The volume contains a chronological list of brief summaries of papers relating to the activities of the Indian Expeditionary Force D (also known as the Mesopotamia Expeditionary Force) between 1 and 15 December 1915. This is accompanied by appendices containing copies and extracts of these papers, which include letters, memoranda, telegrams, and intelligence summaries and appreciations [reports] from the Directorate of Military Operations.

A summary of the contents of this volume can be found at folios 7-9. The volume mostly relates to:

  • General Charles Townshend’s withdrawal to Kut-al-Amarah [al-Kut], attacks by Turkish [Ottoman] forces on the town, and plans for its relief
  • The supply of river craft for Force D
  • Reinforcements and other personnel for Force D, with particular details of the Meerut and Lahore divisions which are being despatched from France (ff 197-205)
  • Supplies and equipment for Force D
  • Intelligence regarding reinforcements for and movements of Turkish forces, and their equipping by Germany.

The following tables appear:

  • Composition of Force D (ff 3-6)
  • Effective strengths of the fighting units of Force D (ff 154 and 184).

The vast majority of material in the volume dates from December 1915, but there is also a small amount of material which dates from September and November 1915.
