Mesopotamia.
Tigris Line .—There were no further developments to report on 11th December ...
Euphrates Line .—In spite of Ajaimi's attempts to rouse tribes into co-operating with Turks for an
advance on this line) the attitude of the tribes is so far reported to be satisfactory.
The General Officer Commanding, Eorce “ D, ” stated what water transport for aviation was required in
addition to that asked for up to 20th November.
The Base Commandant, Basrah, reported the sailing of the “ Takada, ” giving details of sick and wounded
on board.
The Secretary, War Office, repeated a telegram from Major Marsh in which he stated that a column was
occupying Sultan Bulagi on December 9th, the 49th Militia Brigade was at Dilw r an, and that a
Brigade of Russian Infantry had been sent south to Sauj Bulagh as reinforcements.
The General Officer Commanding, Eorce “ D ” reported the arrival of marks, III, IV, V and VI of
15-pr. shrapnel reserve for Home Counties Brigade, Royal Field Artillery, and enquired if the tw r o
former marks could be used with the B. L. C. 15-pr. guns on charge of this Brigade.
The General Officer Commanding, Eorce “D, ,5 gave particulars of staffs of various Departments, stating
the additional staff required.
The Base Commandant, Marseilles, reported the sailing of the “ City of Glasgow^, ” which carried the
57th Rifles and Veterinary Medical and Supply units.
The General Officer Commanding, Eorce “ D, ” reported the arrival of the “IJmballa” with reinforce
ments. The “Lmballa ” carried part of the 12th Cavalry.

The volume contains a chronological list of brief summaries of papers relating to the activities of the Indian Expeditionary Force D (also known as the Mesopotamia Expeditionary Force) between 1 and 15 December 1915. This is accompanied by appendices containing copies and extracts of these papers, which include letters, memoranda, telegrams, and intelligence summaries and appreciations [reports] from the Directorate of Military Operations.

A summary of the contents of this volume can be found at folios 7-9. The volume mostly relates to:

  • General Charles Townshend’s withdrawal to Kut-al-Amarah [al-Kut], attacks by Turkish [Ottoman] forces on the town, and plans for its relief
  • The supply of river craft for Force D
  • Reinforcements and other personnel for Force D, with particular details of the Meerut and Lahore divisions which are being despatched from France (ff 197-205)
  • Supplies and equipment for Force D
  • Intelligence regarding reinforcements for and movements of Turkish forces, and their equipping by Germany.

The following tables appear:

  • Composition of Force D (ff 3-6)
  • Effective strengths of the fighting units of Force D (ff 154 and 184).

The vast majority of material in the volume dates from December 1915, but there is also a small amount of material which dates from September and November 1915.
