Tigris Line.— On 7th December there teas nothing further to report regarding situation at Kut-al-
Amarah. On 7th December an aeroplane which flew from Kut to Ali-al-Gharbi reports having
seen cavalry brigade on the march on right bank near Orah at 9 a.m. S ai siepor e a ei f® *
arrived at noon on 7th December at Shaikh Sa’ad. The aeroplane also reports Ds Smn position
General Townshend reports hostile force estimated at 1 division with about 8 guns entrenched north
west (?) of Kut on right bank Another force estimated at 1,500 with guns is not th-west of
bridge on left bank of Tigris. Another force, bulk of two divisions, is on left bank 5 or 6 miles
upstream (?) of Kut. [See Summary for 7 th December 1915.} Our cavalry brigade reached Ah-al-
Gharbi on 8th December. 2 battalions of 28th Brigade are due at fh-at-Gharbim OM December. 1
battalion on 10th December. Bemaining battalion and one battery left Basrah on 8th December.

The volume contains a chronological list of brief summaries of papers relating to the activities of the Indian Expeditionary Force D (also known as the Mesopotamia Expeditionary Force) between 1 and 15 December 1915. This is accompanied by appendices containing copies and extracts of these papers, which include letters, memoranda, telegrams, and intelligence summaries and appreciations [reports] from the Directorate of Military Operations.
A summary of the contents of this volume can be found at folios 7-9. The volume mostly relates to:
- General Charles Townshend’s withdrawal to Kut-al-Amarah [al-Kut], attacks by Turkish [Ottoman] forces on the town, and plans for its relief
- The supply of river craft for Force D
- Reinforcements and other personnel for Force D, with particular details of the Meerut and Lahore divisions which are being despatched from France (ff 197-205)
- Supplies and equipment for Force D
- Intelligence regarding reinforcements for and movements of Turkish forces, and their equipping by Germany.
