, tne minister of Posts and Telegraphs came to
ny house at 5.30 p.m. on the 26th of October, hr. Nerd/on
was present -t our interview. After some ordinary
conversation I reminded him that a few days ago he had said
on parting that there was some information he wanted and I
enquired what it was. He replied that it was nothing much
and that doubtless r r. Newton would give it to him some time.
He was disinclined to pursue the subject, so I dropped it
and said he was of course aware of the fact that H.H.
Teymour Tache had insisted that it was not right that a
Dent, belonging to another Govt, should work Telegraphs in
Persia. I said that after such deliberation and
correspondence H.h.O. had decided to make a beau geste and
accept H.H T s. point of vie\ : , with a view to showing their
sympathy with Persia with whom they were negotiating a new
treaty. Now that they had taken this decision they were
naturally desirous of giving effect to it without undue
delay and that we wanted to know which of the 2 dates (1st
Deer, or 1st harch) given to H.H. the Minister for Foreign
Affairs would suit H.E. best for taking over the lines. I
added that I was leaving immediately for London and on
arrival should of course be asked questions about the
settlement of our affairs, and I wanted to be able to
furnish definite information.
H.E. replied that he had been referred to by the
Minister for Foreign Affairs but for want of information had
been unable to reply. He said it was a question of budget
provision to carry on the work we had done. He asked what
the Company would do and I replied that I had not discussed
matters with their Superintendent and could not say what
their decision would be. He referred to the possibility of
their taking over the Tehran Bushire line to which I replied
that under their concession they had the rimht to do so.
