Translated purport of Sheikh Esaw bin Khulepah’s statement, dated 9th Rujub 1290 (2nd
September 1873.)
The Kaim tribe and their dependents*have ever been my subjects; they
w ere at Gaittur, and paid religious tithes until three years ago one year’s was
paid through the late Major Smith. Subsequently the Gutturees and their
hinel, Mahomed bin Sauce, rebelled and went under the protection of another,
but the tribe of IN aim and their dependants remained my subjects and paid their
annual tribute. 1
Zobareh is a property under the rule of Bahrein and which belonged to the

I request that the Sahib will look into the records of Colonel Belly when
he will know what is required by me, and if nothing is found out I request that

In reference to the statement of Sheikh Esaw, the Chief of Bahrein, dated
Aitchison’s Treaties, Volume 7, Treaties 9th Bujub 1290 (2nd September 1873) alWina- the
Nos. 72 and 73 . Naim tribe to be dependants of Bahrein? which
has been sent to me for report, I have the honor to inform you that after con
sulting the treaties mentioned in the margin I have arrived at the conclusions—
16^. That there is no special mention made in the treaties either of the
el Naim or of Zobareh, though in Article I of Treaty No. 72, there is a men
tion made of the dependencies of Bahrein, though it is not stated what those
dependencies are.
2nd .—Erom what I have heard whilst living in Bahrein, I should say that
some years ago the Naim, together with many other of the Guttur tribes,
were in certain ways dependencies of Bahrein; but the amount of authority
exercised by the rulers of Bahrein over Guttur seems to have varied in propor
tion to the power of coercion those rulers possessed; if the Chief of Bahrein
w as. strong the tribes acknowledged his supremacy ; if he was weak they
denied it.

and your report thereon, No. 44, dated 11th September 1873, I have the honor
to request you will be guided for the present in replying to any further ques
tions of Sheikh Esaw on this subject by my letter No. 1074-366, dated the
28th ultimo, to your address.
