Content

Veterinary manual on the medical treatment of horses, consisting of a summary of the fifth and sixth chapters (مقالات) of the Kitāb kāmil al-ṣināʻatayn fī al-bayṭarah wa-al-zardaqah (كتاب كامل الصناعتين في البيطرة والزردقة), also known as Kāshif hamm al-wayl fī maʻrifat amrāḍ al-khayl (كاشف هم الويل في معرفة أمراض الخيل, see f. 36v, lines 11-14 and f. 59, lines 4-5), by Abū Bakr ibn Badr al-Dīn ibn al-Mundhir al-Bayṭār al-Nāṣirī (أبو بكر بن بدر الدينن بن المنذرالبيطار الناصري, d.1340). Al-Bayṭār was the horse veterinarian of Sultan al-Nāṣir ibn Qalāwūn (الناصر بن قلاوون), and the treatise is also known as al-Nāṣirī .

The author, whose name is given in the present volume as ʻAbd Allāh ibn al-Badr al-Miṣrī (عبد الله ابن البدر المصري, see below, f. 10r, line 10), relates that he gathered, tested and compiled recipes used by his own father (see incipit, f. 10r, lines 11-14, transcribed below). The medications and recipes are described and occasionally illustrated with diagrams (ff. 36r, 36ar, 48r, 49v, 52v, 58v, 59r, 61r, 72r and 91r).

The text was copied on 2 Āb (August), 1838 by the scribe al-Khūrī ('The Priest') Mikhāīl Shabāṭ ʻAramūnī for Shaykh Haydar, son of the deceased Shaykh Hind al-Khāz (see colophon Section at the end of a manuscript text. , f. 94r, lines 13-17).

The text is organised into four chapters (مقالة) each subdivided into many entries (باب) enumerated in the contents list (ff. 4r-10r) and corresponding in order to the Kitāb kāmil al-ṣināʻatayn . F. 20 is bound out of order, and rpoperly belongs to the fourth chapter between ff. 90 and 91.

The flyleaves and first three folios contain figures and notes relating to the births and lineages of foals.
