Content

Versified abbreviation of a text on timekeeping (توقيت) using an astrolabe Ancient instrument for astronomical observations. quadrant (الربع بمقنطرات) centred on the Mosque of al-Hākim (presumably in Cairo). The introduction to the text mentions that it consists of ten bābs (أبواب) and a conclusion (خاتمة), a division found in the present copy although the expected rubricated section headings were not added.

The author (possibly to be read al-Mazālī, المزالي: the name of a Tunisian Berber tribe), is unknown.

Begins (f. 47v, lines 9-12):

قال فقير عفو ربه عمر حمد المزلي بالنوال قد عمر

مصليًا ثم مسلمًا على محمد وآله أولى العلاء

وبعد هذه نبذة في العمل بالربع إن مقنطرات تكمل

من اختصار اللفظ في النهاية والكشف في المعنى له في الغاية

Ends (f. 50r, lines 10-12):

فليسر حق ذلك المقول شيئا سوى السماح والقبول

انتهى كما وجد بحمد الله وحسن عونه والصلاة والسلام على سيدنا ومولانا محمد نبيه وعبده وعلى آله

وصحبه وسلم تسليمًا وآخر دعوانا أن الحمد لله رب العالمين
