ANNEXURE to G.R.O. No. 422, dated 10 th April, 1918.
Approved Method of carrying Lewis Guns.
, . The number of Lewis Gun mules per Infantry Battalion having been increased from 28 to
32, there will be in future for each Lewis Gun, one gun mule and one ammunition mule.
The present pattern gun saddles will be returned to the Ordnance Department and 12 pack
and draught saddles will be issued in lieu from the Advanced Transport Depot. Every mule will
then carry a pack and draught saddle.
The method of loading is as follows :—
Gun Mule.
Near side.—Suspend a “ rack box carrier magazine " from the hooks on the saddle.
In the rack place one " box carrier magazine ” filled i.e., with two carriers (or four pouches)
and eight magazines.
Suspend the gun in its cover, butt to the rear, from the hooks of the saddle by two hangers
of lengthened pattern. Tighten and buckle the securing straps of the hangers. Care should be
taken to see that the slots in the blocks on the hangers fit properly over the side pieces of the rack.
Fasten the securing straps of the rack carrier magazine over the gun and box carrier.
Off side.—Suspend a " rack box carrier magazine ” from the hooks on the saddle,
in the rack place one box carrier magazine filled and one box carrier magazine in which is
one carrier filled in one compartment and one spare part bag in the other.
Ammunition Mule.
Near side.—Suspend a rack box carrier magazine from the hooks on the saddle.
In the rack place one box carrier magazine filled and one box carrier magazine with one
carrier and four magazines,
Off side.—As for near side.

The papers are arranged in approximate chronological order from the front to the rear of the volume.

Physical characteristics

Foliation: this file consists of two physical volumes. The foliation sequence (used for referencing) commences at the first folio of volume one (ff 1-188) and terminates at the last folio of volume two (ff 189-378); these numbers are printed and are located in the top right corner of the recto The front of a sheet of paper or leaf, often abbreviated to 'r'. side of each folio. The foliation sequence does not include the front and back covers of the two volumes. The sequence contains one foliation anomaly, f 308a.
