4— Care of Respirators.
Officers and men are warned that only a limited number of Respirators are available and that every
care must be taken to protect them from damage. y
5 - Record of hours Respirators have been breathed through.
This is important, and before Respirators are returned by Units, this record must be entered on the
history card up-to-date. With this object. Units will keep a record by Companies, Batteries, or equivalent
formations, of all dm is carried out with small box respirators, stating approximately the period the mouthpiece
was in the mouth at each drill. This record will be produced for signature by the Divisional Gas Officer at
his periodical inspections. I he history cards will be entered up from this record on the last day of every
month while the unit is in camp. Care must be taken that all cards are entered up before a unit marches out
of a camp.
Example :—The Respirator has been breathed through for 23 hours while the unit was in camp during
the month of January. The history card should read thus 22 hrs. 31/1. In the field the history card
will be entered up on every occasion the mask is put on.
In making these entries, due regard must be paid to the small amount of space provided on the card
and as little of it used as possible in making each entry.
6 -Storage of Respirators whilst in Camp.
After every drill, respirators will be collected and packed in wooden boxes ; they should be stored
under shelters independently by Companies, Batteries or equivalent formations.
In the field each man is responsible for his own respirator.
7—Disposal of condemned Respirators.
(a) An inspection of respirators will be held fortnightly.
{b} Any defective respirator will be condemned and replaced by another of similar size from the
5 per cent reserve.
(c) Condemned respirators must be returned to Ordnance. To the rubber tube connecting the face-piece
to the canister, a label will be attached, by means of the whipcord, stating that the respirator has been
condemned, the nature of the defect and certifying that the breathing record has been entered up-to-date on
the history card, and the mouthpiece disinfected ; the label will be signed by the Officer who condemns the
respirator. To avoid being torn off, the label will not hang outside the respirator satchel.
For all condemned respirators returned to Ordnance, new ones will be indented for, to keep up the
5 per cent reserve.
