9 The issues of corps and engineer pay so retained are subject to the usual rules
relating thereto laid down in Articles 844 to 848, Pay Warrant.. with the exception of
that requiring the performance of corps duties in these circumstance s it is necessary
that any casualties (e.g. confinement to barracks or camp) which under Articles 844 to
848, Pay Warrant, would affect the issue of corps or engineer pay should be notified in
Part II Orders. . _ .
3. The attention of officers concerned is accordingly drawn to the necessity of
notifying casualties affecting engineer or corps pay drawn by soldiers under their com
mand, in Part II Orders, in order that regimental paymasters may be ma position to
adjust the accounts of the soldiers concerned — A-1530. 30—iSC.566 ( .6).
140. With reference to General Routine Order No. 428. of 1917. The grant of
staff pay under paragraph 576, A.R.I., Volume 1, is limited to soldier clerks employed
in staff offices. For this purpose, military offices other than regimental offices and those
which carry special rates of staff pay for soldier clerks employed therein, are classed as
staff offices. Clerical establishments of Posts and Sections on the Lines of Com
munication will be dealt with as laid down in India Army Order No. 819 of 1917.

Flares for Practice

141. The expenditure of flares by formations for practice in aeroplane contact
patrol work up to an average of 25 flares per infantry battalion per month is sanctioned.

142. Instructions for the issue, care and disposal of the small box respirator are
published as an annexure to this order.
These instructions apply to all formations and units to whom full issue of small
box respirators is sanctioned by G.H.Q from time to time.— Q-215.
Irrigation
143. A Directorate of Irrigation has been formed and will deal with the following
subjects :—

The development, maintenance and control of irrigation
The provision and maintenance of flood banks, and such river conservancy
work as may be necessary to control, in the interests of irrigation and
_ navigation, the large canals flowing out of the main rivers.

(c) The construction and maintenance of all roads, bridges and buildings in areas
where no Works Establishment exists.

The Irrigation Districts are shown in an annexure to this order. .
. Until further notice all communications should be addressed to " Director of
Irrigation at General Headquarters.” Further intimation will be given when the
Irrigation District Offices have been opened.—Q-1986.
