SPECIAL SUPERNUMERARY PROMOTIONS TO AND IN
NON-COMMISSIONED RANKS OF INDIAN UNITS
Rules under which the promotion is granted.
1. Such promotions shall not exceed 5 per cent, of the establishment of each non
commissioned rank of the unit in which they are made.
2. Men so promoted will be absorbed in the rank to which they are promoted as follows .
(a) " Class" Company or Squadron, or mixed units—in the first vacancy which
subsequently occurs in that class to which the man belongs.
(b) " Class ” Regiments—in the first vacancy in the unit.
3. Such promotion will not usually be given as an additional reward to a soldier for the
same act of gallantry for which the Indian Order of Merit, Indian Distinguished Service Medal,
or Meritorious Service Medal has been awarded, but only in very exceptional cases. (In this
connection see Army Regulations, India, Vol. 1, para. 1007).
4. Onb those who are likely to prove successful in the higher rank are to be recommended
for such promotion.

5. Recommendations are to be submitted as occasion arises and are not to be included with
other rewards or with names intended for despatches.
6. Names are to be submitted on A.F.W. 3121 through the usual channel to the D.A.G..
