Courts Martial
Adjutant General’s Branch.
349. No. 3063 Sepoy Term used in English to refer to an Indian infantryman. Carries some derogatory connotations as sometimes used as a means of othering and emphasising race, colour, origins, or rank. Sikandar Khan, Burma Infantry, was tried by Summary
General Court Martial on the following charge —
“ Deserting the Service.”
The sentence of the Court was : " To suffer death by being shot to death.”
The sentence was duly carried out at 6.10 a.m. on the 25th May, 1917.
Bathing
350. Subordinate Commanders are responsible that British ranks are only allowed
to bathe in the river during the early morning and late evening, that is, when the sun
has less power. Even then it may be necessary occasionally to wear helmets whilst
bathing.
Camping Grounds
351. The ground in the immediate vicinity of the Khor Tarmiyah is not to be
used for camping troops.
Compensation for
Injuries
352. In the event of individuals employed by the Controller of Native Labour or
his representatives, being admitted to hospital suffering from slight injuries received
whilst employed on Government work, they will receive half-pay for the period of
their detention in hospital.
Cases of serious disability, caused by injuries or illness, will be dealt with
individually.
Discipline
353. Attention is drawn to General Routine Order No. 1813, dated 6th December,
1916. The Army Commander notices with displeasure that the instructions therein
conveyed by the Army Council are not being universally observed.
Subordinate Commanders are to give this matter their attention.
354. In General Routine Order No. 272, dated 25th April, 1917. the number of
No. 153, Porter Ashiq Ali, should read as now stated.
Dress
355. The practice of wearing white shirts and black ties during the day (except
in the case of units authorised to wear black ties) is to be discontinued.
Judicial
356. With effect from 1st June, 1917, references on questions of Military Law,
including the submission of Proceedings of Courts Martial, either before or after
confirmation, are to be made as follows :
(a) By formations at the Base, or the L. of C.. or the Karun or
Euphrates Fronts—to the D.J.A.G., L. of C.. whose office will be at the Base.
(b) All other formations to the D.J.A.G.. G.H.Q.

Summary Powers
357. Units and departments employing local labour which has to pass backwards
and forwards through the Baghdad Control Posts are to furnish each man with either
an identity disc or a pass. Supplies of the latter can be obtained by arrangement with
the Officer i/c Pass Bureau.
358. On the receipt of copies of Map No. T.C. 87 (a), now under issue? all copies
of the previous map T.C. 87 are to be destroyed.
359. List No. 21 of appointments, promotions, etc., is issued to those concerned.
360. The British Red Cross Society deals exclusively with the requirements of
Hospitals, Hospital Ships, Convalescent Camps and Depots. Applications by units or
gifts are not to be directed to the Commissioner or Deputy Commissioner of the Butish
Red Cross Society, but to the Officer i/c War Gifts, Baghdad.
