1718. The following addition is made to General Routine Order No. 1702, dated •
loth November, 1916 : — Para 2, second line, after the word " conviction add ‘ ‘ and a death
sentence-being passed."

1719 The first two lines of General Routine Order No. 1604, of 6th October, 1916,
are cancelled, and the following substituted: —
The Union Jack will be flown on a prominent building to be selected by the O.C.
Troops at each of the following places :—
Ashar.
Basrah City.
Nasiriyah.
A marah.
Kurna.
Sheikh Saad.
Ahwaz
Bushire.
In the event of G.H.Q bi ing located at any of the above places the flag usually
flown will be struck, as the I nion Jack distinguishing G.H.Q. will take its place.
Army Council Instruction No. 1840, dated 23rd September, 1916, is
pubshed as an annex ure to this order.
1721 It is notified for informat ion that the War Office has decided that Temporary
Bank granted under the 30 days’ rule should be called Acting Bank.

1723 The packages and stores received in E. Section are now regularly cleared
every fortnight. and it is hoped to still further reduce the period of detention in Basrah
prior to the despatch of consignments up river. The practice by which officers and
others have made private arrangements with the Captains and crews of river craft, for
the conveyance of packages and stores up river, is to be at once discontinued.
1724. Approval is given for issue to Indian General and Stationary Hospitals of —
Slippers, leather, pairs—at the rate of one per bed.
Indents should be submitted on the Ordnance Department in the usual way, and
upply will be made as store; become available.
1725 An issue of one day’s preserved meat will be made every Thursday to all
British troops in lieu of fresh meat.
1726. In making demands for the necessary stores to give effect to the Army
Commander’s policy, as communicated to them from time to time, Directors are to be
careful to ascertain either themselves or through their Deputies that such stores can
on arrival be handled expeditiously by the I.G C.
When demands of an increased nature are made from Home,, or on India or Egypt,
ihe words “I.G.C. concurs” should be inserted in the telegram, so that the recipient
may be satisfied that despatch will not cause congestion at the Port of Basrah.
