NOTES ON THE UNDERGROUND WATER RESOURCES OF
NORTHERN MESOPOTAMIA.
INTRODUCTION.
A large part of Mesopotamia and Southern Kurdistan to the North of Baghdad has now been
surveyed geologically and certain conclusions have been arrived at as to the prospects of obtaining
water from underground sources.
This report is made for the use of those who intend to bore wells for water either for domestic
or irrigation purposes. The aim is to indicate those areas in which the conditions necessary for the
accumulation of water are fulfilled and to point out the most favourable spots. Its usefulness will
be, perhaps, rather as a guide to prevent useless boring.
Underground water can be divided into two main classes :—
(I) Pluvial. —Water which has fallen as rain or snow and descended into the ground and
become retained by underlying strata.
(II) Fossil Water —Water which was in the formation when it was formed.
We shall only deal with the former. It is possible, however, that fossil water does occur in
some places.
Pluvial water sinks into the subsoil underlying strata and forms a “ water-table M or ‘‘water'
plane”, below which level the rocks are saturated with water. The depth at which the “water-
table ” is situated will vary with the geological conditions, rainfall, etc. This water can be reached
by boring but the depth at which it lies cannot be estimated until one or two wells have
been sunk.
Under certain conditions artesian water may be expected. By artesian water is meant that
which is contained in the underlying rocks of the country, when tapped will rise above the surface
of the ground or to a higher level than the water-table of the district. The conditions necessary
for artesian water are :—
(1) Sufficient rainfall.
(2) An area in which water will collect and descend into the underlying strata.
(3) Strata which will absorb water—such as sands, sandstone, gravel and some limestones.
(4) Underlying and overlying strata which are impervious such as clays and marls.
(5) Suitable geological structure i. e., a syncline or preferably a basin.
MAP ACCOMPANYING THE REPORT.
The map is on the scale of l" 8 miles and shows the principal physical features.
Geological formations have not been indicated. Areas of favourable structure, in which the water-
table should be reasonably near the surface are indicated by horizontal broken lines. Areas in
which the conditions for artesian water are fulfilled are indicated by veitical broken lines.

GEOLOGICAL FORMATIONS AND THEIR WATER-BEARING PROPERTIES.
In Mesopotamia and Southern Kurdistan the geological formations range from Cretaceous to
Recent. They are as follows, starting with the most recent :
Alluvium —Silts formed by the present river system.
Gravel —Formed by present or past river systems.
Bakhtiari Beds —A very thick series of gravels, conglomerates, sandstones and marls.
Uf'per Pars Ms.—Alternating beds of marl and sandstone. The thickness is at least
2,000 feet.
Eocene beds.—The Upper part is mostly limestone and the lower mostly shale.
Cretaceous beds .—Entirely composed of limestone.
Of these formations the Bakhtiari and the Upper Fars can be looked upon as suitable water
bearing formations and in some places they furnish the conditions laid down above for artesian
water. The Lower Fars is considered unsuitable for the following reasons :
(1) There are no good water-bearing strata in it.
(2) It crops out in nearly every case, in the form of an anticline, a structure which is
unfavourable.
(3) There is a considerable quantity of salt and sulphur in the formation which would make
the chance of encountering bad watei very high.
Therefore, areas in which the Upper Fars and Bakhtiari beds occur as synclines may be looked
upon as favourable for prospecting with the drill and they are marked on the map attached.

The areas are described under the heading of the Political Divisions in which they fall : the
numbers refer to the map.

The principal correspondents are: the Civil Commissioner, Baghdad; the Under-Secretary of State, India Office The department of the British Government to which the Government of India reported between 1858 and 1947. The successor to the Court of Directors. ; the Political Agent A mid-ranking political representative (equivalent to a Consul) from the diplomatic corps of the Government of India or one of its subordinate provincial governments, in charge of a Political Agency. , Baghdad; officers of the Imperial Mineral Resources Bureau; and officers from the Petroleum Department.

The volume includes a divider which gives the subject number, the year the subject file was opened, the subject heading, and a list of correspondence references by year. This is placed at the back of the correspondence.
