1 . Apart from the ports of Alexandria, Port Said and Suez owned by
the Government, there was also a Government repair workshop at
1 Cairo to which all their own river craft were taken.
2. For the irrigation service inspection, there was a fleet of twelve
steamers. While all these were used during flood time, only two
were in regular commission.
5. Both the Minister of Finance and the Minister of the Interior had
a steamer at their disposal. The former also had a tug in commis
sion.
4. There were a few Public Works Department oil barges, which served
the pumping stations.
5 . The Sultan had quite a fleet of river yachts, but few of these were
ever used.
3 As regards non-Governmental craft, two big firms ran steamers for
tourists; the lesser companies ran several vessels on passenger
service and three small companies had fleets of
ger vessels and there were similarly a small fleet of/passenger
vessels on Lake Menzaleh.
7. Over and above all these steamers, there was an innumerable fleet
of privately owned, sailing vessels, many being from 200 to 300
tons capacity which carried both goods and passengers.
8. The conditions prevailing in Egypt most worthy of observation are
(1) The excellent railway services.
(2) The keen competition between the natives who are natural
boatmen on the river, the number of whom keep prices down
below any possibility of a monopoly level.
