This item consists of copies of correspondence, minutes, and consultations cited in, or enclosed with, political letters from the Government of Bombay From c. 1668-1858, the East India Company’s administration in the city of Bombay [Mumbai] and western India. From 1858-1947, a subdivision of the British Raj. It was responsible for British relations with the Gulf and Red Sea regions. . These political letters appear in IOR/F/4/2416/130506. It is the eighth in a series of twenty-eight items on the Persian Gulf The historical term used to describe the body of water between the Arabian Peninsula and Iran. .

The correspondents are: the Government of Bombay From c. 1668-1858, the East India Company’s administration in the city of Bombay [Mumbai] and western India. From 1858-1947, a subdivision of the British Raj. It was responsible for British relations with the Gulf and Red Sea regions. ; Lieutenant-Colonel Samuel Hennell, Resident in the Persian Gulf The historical term used to describe the body of water between the Arabian Peninsula and Iran. ; and Commodore John Patterson Porter, Commanding the Indian Naval Squadron, Persian Gulf The historical term used to describe the body of water between the Arabian Peninsula and Iran. .

The item contains Commodore Porter’s report of his tour of the Arabian coast of the Gulf, with details of his interviews with a number of the rulers, or their representatives, and with Moollah Houssein [Mullā Ḥusayn], the Agent at Shargah. Topics discussed include the situation in Braimee [Al Buraymi], and a dispute between dependents of the rulers of Debaye [Dubai] and Aboothabee [Abu Dhabi].

Also included are:

  • Commodore Porter’s instructions to Lieutenant James Tronson, commanding HC brig Euphrates , for proceeding to Bahrein [Bahrain], which Porter was unable to do during his tour
  • A list of the presents given to the rulers of the Arabian coast in 1850.

The item contains a table of contents (f 511), and the title page (f 510) contains the following references: ‘Dft. No. 424 of 1851’, Collection No. 1, Vol. 8’, and ‘Examiner’s Office’.
