Priority.
Continuation my X.-7002 of 25 (Dy. No. 41798). Following is now the
situation 8 officers and 6 British Other Banks interned unharmed at
Suleiman lyeh. Our roconnaissance from Kirkuk driven back to Chemchemal
which we hold. By 2nd June a strong force of all arms will be concentrated
at Kirkuk. At present Mahmud’s force consists of considerable body of Kurds
from Persia. Mahmud appears anxious and has asked for an interview with
Civil Commissioner but has been told that he can only interview troops unless
he sends the British prisoners in. This he seems likely to do. Other tribes are
waiting on events and Central and Northern Kurdistan are quiet. Question
of attack on Mahmud from the South East is being arranged by Wilson with
Jaf confederation.
I now solicit definite orders from Government as to whether they wish
Southern Kurdistan occupied by force, or merely sufficiently contained to
prevent spread of disturbance to Mesopotamia. Should former be decided on,
1 will occupy Suleiman lyeh at once, and indicate improvement in communica
tions required. It is probable that these will entail extension of metre gauge
line to Kirkuk on profile alignment recommended by De Candelle. Pending
receipt of definite policy I am acting as well best extricate British Prisoners
and maintain prestige and order.

of an officer R. A. F. Baghdad who is being deputed for the purpose indicated
above. _____
