It appears probable, in view of your 79108 Cipher A. 3, June 21 st (Dy.
No. 54435) and India’s 53468 Q. M. G. 16 A., June 24th and 56816 Q. M. G.
16 A, July 3rd, that 8,700 S. M. L. E. rifles in question will not be surplus,
but that they, and possibly a further supply, will be needed for arming drafts
as they arrive. When exact position has been ascertained further particulars
will he sent. In future, in order to avoid having to demand further supplies
of S.M.L.E., H.V., rifles, I propose to re-arm men proceeding out of this
country on demobilisation with 1914 pattern rifles.

Decision has been made that reserves of all kinds of war material and
1 chano outfit be should maintained at the present
c an8e ' time to provide for (a) remobilization in
the near future should it be found to be necessary. (£) Eequirements in accord
ance with a scheme of defence which will be approved later. The following
are the formations which it may he necessary to mobilize.
Egypt .—Five Indian Divisions; Two Indian Cavalry Divisions; Army
1 ch Corps, and* L. of C. troops for one army
and two Corps.
Mesopotamia .—Two Indian Divisions; Tw 7 o Indian Cavalry Brigades;
Army and L. of C. troops. Eemobilization, in the case of Egypt, would not
necessarily mean that troops would be utilized for operations in the present
sphere of the E. E. Force, and the equipment for use in a further war would
in all probablity not eventually all be retained in Egypt.
