Summary of events.
The Inspector-General of Communications, Force <c D,” submitted the name of Major T. E. W.
Yenning, 31st Punjabis, for Staff College, Conose.
The Deputy Adjutant-General, 3rd Echelon, Basrah, wired his return of troops awaiting conveyance
on January 31st.
The Secretary, War Office, approved appointment of Brigadier-General A. J. H. Swiney as Director
of Works, Force <e D.”
The Political Resident A senior ranking political representative (equivalent to a Consul General) from the diplomatic corps of the Government of India or one of its subordinate provincial governments, in charge of a Political Residency. ,. Baghdad, requested the Secretary of State for India to contradict the state
ment by Daily Mail that India expected to be mandatory of Mesopotamia.
The Secretary of State for India informed Baghdad that the Foreign Office had granted permission to
Doctor Ellis, of the “New York Herald ” to proceed to Mesopotamia via Egypt.

The Secretary, War Office, intimated that he awaited India’s remarks on Baghdad’s proposals relative
to General Head Quarters Staffs and Departments.
The Secretary, War Office, was informed by General Officer Commanding, Force “ D,” that in con
nection with units selected for the Army of occupation certain units will not be available and that
another battalion would have to be detailed in place of the 7th Gloucesters.
The General Officer Commanding, Force “ D ” was asked to give a full description and numbers of
the ammunition and grenades he wished to dispose of.
