Clear the line. —Self-determination at Baghdad. There has been a growth
in the strength of the revulsion of feeling referred to in my telegram of the
26th January, No. 10/7 (N. R. W. S.) and three declarations have been received
by me signed by leading Muhammadans, whose combined influence is very
much superior to that of signatories of first declaration, asking for British
protection without an Amir. A document in which a similar request is made
has also been received by me from Madhimain referred to in last paragraph
of my above-mentioned telegram. All tribal Sheikhs in the area without
exception have signed it.
