Despatch of 1,700 boxes tin plate mentioned in latter will deplete oar local;
resources of this type of plate at present in sight but if replacement can be
arranged this number of boxes, equal to 80 tons, will be sent to Basrah to
coyer their unforeseen need at Abadan.

In reply to your letter No. Q.-l238-6, dated the 8th January 1918 (Dy.
No. 8449),. In which you bring to notice that it is considered that the supply of
bridging equipment and electrical and mechanical stores is susceptible of im
provement, and suggest that a Royal Engineer Officer should be placed at the
disposal of the Indian Munitions Board for the purpose of inspecting materials
during manufacture of stores and equipment, and to furnish the Board with ex
pert opinion on all such articles before despatch, I am directed to inform you
with reference to the particular complaints regarding supply of pontoons men
tioned by you that this illustration does not appear to support the recommenda
tions in favour of which it is adduced, since the pontoons in question were
passed on completion by a Koyal Engineer Officer. Arrangements have,
however, since been made for the periodical inspection of pontoons and bridge
equipment during construction,, as well as after completion^ by an officer of
Sappers and Miners.
2. The Director-General, Military Works, has been consulted, and agrees,
that R. E. officers of suitable qualifications for the inspection of electrical and
mechanical stores could not be spared from the available R. E. officers in India,
where it must be understood much electrical and mechanical work in connection
,with the health, etc,., of troops is in progress.. Even when the supply of
