VACCINATION.

The number of males primarily vaccinated was 292^463, and of
females 269 ; 506. Those re-vaccinated were respectively 40,083
and 29,094 ; the total of the two kinds of operation show 332,546
males and 298,600 females. The percentages for primary opera
tions were 52*04 and 47’96 respectively; for re-vaccinations 57‘94
and 42‘06 ; and for both operations 52'69 and 47*31. This also
shows an improvement over the preceding year, as the disparity
between the numbers vaccinated of the two sexes has diminished.

Sex.
There were this year primarily vaccinated 3,347 Christians, Race.
436,951 Hindus, 88,780 Muhammadans, 1,542 Parsis, and 31,349
persons of other castes. The percentages were respectively 0*60,
77*75, 15*80, 0*27, and 5*58, and it was this last percentage alone
which was lower (and that by only 0*92) than the proportion for
the previous year.
Taking the total number vaccinated by age-periods, there have Age*
been primarily vaccinated 308,684 infants under a year old,
233,664 children between 1 and 6 years, and 19,621 persons of all
other ages. Out of these, the numbers successfully vaccinated
were 292,828 infants, 219,916 children between 1 and 6 years,
and 18,477 persons of all other ages. Out of every 100 persons
primarily vaccinated, therefore, there were 54*93 infants, of whom
52*11 were protected, against 47*55 in 1877-78, and 42*18 in
1876-77.
English lymph was received in November and December 1878, Ly m ph.
and the results with it were fairly good. The lymph in use was
found to be good, except in Gujarat, Aden and the Konkan.
Animal vaccination is kept up in Poona and Bombay. In Animal yacci
Surat it had unfortunately to be given up for want of heifers. natl0n *
The cow-lymph received from Dr. Warlomont, of Brussels, turned
out very well. During the current year vaccination has been
made compulsory in the town of Kurrachee, as has been mentioned
in the section of this Report that treats of Legislation.
The total expenditure on vaccination was Rs. 2,33,704-12-11, or ^ ost *
Rs. 2,664-3-2 less than in the previous year. The distribution
of this expenditure, according to establishments, is as follows :—

Annual administration report of the Bombay Presidency The name given to each of the three divisions of the territory of the East India Company, and later the British Raj, on the Indian subcontinent. , providing a summary record of the main events and developments in each department of the Government of Bombay From c. 1668-1858, the East India Company’s administration in the city of Bombay [Mumbai] and western India. From 1858-1947, a subdivision of the British Raj. It was responsible for British relations with the Gulf and Red Sea regions. during the financial year 1878-79. The report was printed at the Government Central Press, Bombay [Mumbai] in 1879.

The report is divided into three parts. Part I comprises a report ‘SUMMARY’ (ff 9-53). Part II (ff 54-265) comprises chapters I-IX. Part III comprises ‘Statistical Returns’ pertaining to chapters I-VII and IX (ff 266-435).
