TELEGRAPHS.
The increase in the length of telegraph lines open in the Bombay
Bombay Division was 267 miles, the length of wire open at the Division ‘‘
beginning of the. year having been 6,165*96 miles, and at the
close 6,432*498 miles. Additional wires were laid from Shahabad
to Poona (249| miles).; but, with this exception, the variations
consisted of local additions of wires not more than 7 miles in
length. No change took place in the number of offices at work
during the year. They are, therefore, as follows
First Glass ,—Two permanent; four temporary.
Second Glass .—Nine permanent.
Third Glass. -Twelve permanent, and one which is constituted
a first-class station during a few months of the year.
The total number of messages sent was 285,977, and the
collections amounted to Rs. 6,90,938. Last year the messages
numbered 230,918, and the collections Rs. 6,91,657. Next to
Bombay and Poona, the largest numbers of messages were sent
from Ahmedabad, Hyderabad (Deccan), Bhavnagar and Secunder
abad.
This division contained, at the end of the year, 1,437 miles of Sind,
posts, and 4,100 miles of wire. The line from Hyderabad to
Rohri (206 post miles) was abandoned, and the Bhawalpur Station
closed, in consequence of the opening of the office there by the
Indus Valley State Railway Department. An extra wire from
Sukkur to Jacobabad was laid in consequence of the increased
business in connection with the Afghan Expedition. The high
inundation from the Indus and several violent storms did a great
deal of damage to parts of the lines along the banks. The only
serious interruptions to communications, however, took place at
Sukkur and between Hyderabad and Umarkot. The former was
caused by a storm which broke the spans across the river ; the
cause of the latter and more serious stoppage was not discovered.
The administration for the year was, in other respects, carried on
as usual, and presents no special features calling for notice in this
Report,
There was no change in the length of cable open, which is, as T nf ] n
last year, 1,978 miles. Of this, 574 miles are laid with the gutta- European
percha cable, and the rest with India-rubber. The exceptionally Telegraph,
heavy rainfall caused a great number of interruptions on the land Persia 71 Gul f
line, and in some cases the course of the spannings has been
changed or otherwise improved. A few petty cases of wilful
damage occurred on the Mekran Coast. There were interruptions
on one line or the other for 112 days during the year, but never
simultaneously, so that the interference with traffic was but slight.
The total value of messages transmitted was Rs. 10,97,976, of
which sum Rs. 4,46,071 were net earnings, and Rs. 6,51,905
credited to the other departments connected with this section.
