BOMBAY ADMINISTRATION REPORT.
[ 1878 - 79 .
thunder-storms, and by a less severe storm on the 3rd November
the last four of these days bringing down 5*65 inches of rain
There were four other rainy days between the 20th October and
4th November, during which an aggregate fall of 0-46 inch was
registered, and this, together with 0*08 inch, the aggregate fall
on five days in January, April and May, brings the year’s total up
to 111*93 inches, or 41*63 inches in excess of the normal yearly
rainfall.* The total number of rainy days in the past year was
113, that of the preceding year having been 99.
The additional capacity of the air to receive vapour was less
than its normal value from the 18th to the 30th June by *065 inch
and in the months July, August and September respectively by
*044, *053 and *055 inch. The fact implied by these numbers, that
the air was throughout the monsoon much less dry than usual, is
in accordance with the corresponding excesses of rainfall, which
amount to 10*08 inches, 23*52 inches, 7T9 inches and 7*25 inches.
The two phenomena have a similar progression also in the month
of October, the groups of days 1st to 3rd, 4th, 5th to 18th, and
19th to 26th having mean abnormal additional capacities of-i-O’Sl,
—0‘65, + - 010 and—*094, and mean rainfall excesses of—0*16,
+ 0*51,—0*09 and + 0‘39.
Temperature .—The mean temperature of the year 1878 (80°*0)
was 0°*8 above that of the typical year, and the mean temperatures
of all the months, except January and December, were similarly
in excess of the respective normals.
The following table exhibits the periods of excessive (+) or
defective (—) temperature into which the year may be divided,
the days intervening between these periods being, in respect of
temperature, of a normal character. The average excess or defect
is also shown for each period :—

Wind .—Strong abnormal winds were of much more frequent
occurrence in 1878 than in 1877. In 1878 there were 55 days on
which the abnormal velocity exceeded 10 miles per hour : in 1877
there were only 34 such days. There was an Elephanta storm of
the usual type (though accompanied by only a slight fall of rain at
Bombay), on the 19th and 20th June, during which the wind
The records of Col&ba afford only one year’s rainfall which exceeds this, viz.,
114-89 inches in 1849.
